If you are like many people, you use your dishwasher every day without thinking very much about tasks you should do to make sure it keeps working well. However, it's important to realize that regular maintenance can prolong the life of your appliance. Here are 3 things you can do on a regular basis to make sure your dishwasher functions properly.
Clean the Rubber Gaskets
The rubber strips that line your dishwasher door and create a tight seal to keep water inside the machine are also called gaskets. To make sure your dishwasher gaskets continue to keep water from leaking out, you need to inspect them on a regular basis for signs of tearing or damage. Damage to your gaskets can be caused by mildew and mold that has been allowed to grow. To avoid problems, make sure you clean your gaskets with soapy water on a regular basis.
If there is a problem with your gaskets, you can get replacements at any home improvement store. Before unscrewing the old gaskets and installing the new ones, soak the new ones in warm water so they are more flexible and easier to install.
Clean the Filter
Most dishwashers have a cylindrical filter that lies at the bottom of the machine. The filter is meant to prevent food and other debris from interfering with the cleaning process. If you have noticed that your dishes don't seem to be that clean after a cycle in the dishwasher, a dirty filter may very well be the cause.
To avoid clogs, it is a good idea to check the filter on a regular basis and make sure that you empty it. You may even need to take an old toothbrush and brush away stubborn bits of food before putting the filter back into the machine.
Clean Out Nozzles from Spray Arms
The spray arms that spray water onto your dishes can become clogged over time due to mineral deposits or bits of food. If your dishes always seem to have a film of soap left on them, that could be a sign that the nozzles need to be cleaned out.
Clearing out the arm nozzles will ensure that water flows strongly. The spray arms are typically located in the bottom tray of your dishwasher. Unscrew them and use a small pipe cleaner, toothpick or other thin utensil to dig out any debris in the nozzles. You may also wish to soak the spray arms to soften debris before attempting to clean them and clear the nozzles.
Now that you know some things you can do to keep your dishwasher in good shape, use the information above to keep it working well. If you notice a problem, get in touch with a dishwasher repair company that can have someone diagnose and fix the problem right away.Share
